Learn to Dive (PADI/SSI Certification)
Nearly every Maldives resort runs its own PADI or SSI-affiliated dive centre, and courses build from a shallow introductory dive to full open-water certification over the length of a stay. A typical path starts with a pool or lagoon briefing, moves onto a shallow reef dive with an instructor, and works toward Open Water certification across three to five sessions — scheduled around the rest of the holiday, not instead of it.
The centres themselves vary more than the certification framework does. Baros Maldives has run dives since 1979, one of the country's original operations and still a PADI Five Star Gold Palm centre working in small groups. Constance Moofushi's Bluetribe team has been rated the Maldives' top PADI training operation since 2010, with around 30 sites a short boat ride from the island. Pullman Maldives Maamutaa's Suvadiva Dive Centre is one of only four PADI Eco Centers in the country, and both Niva Kuramathi Maldives and Kuredu Island Resort & Spa keep an on-site hyperbaric chamber — a reassurance most guests never need but some resorts still make room for.
First-timers are the default guest, not the exception. A no-certification Discover Scuba Diving session in shallow water is standard at almost every centre, and some resorts lower the usual age floor for young guests: Baglioni Maldives runs PADI's Bubblemaker programme to a maximum depth of 2 metres, and Jawakara Islands Maldives' dive centre welcomes divers from age 8. Nobody needs a certification card in hand to start.

Dive centres run programmes through both monsoons, but the dry northeast monsoon (Nov–Apr) brings the calmest seas and best visibility for training dives; the wetter southwest monsoon (May–Oct) rarely closes a centre, it just shortens the odd session.

Do I need diving experience to start a course in the Maldives?
No. The standard entry point at almost every resort dive centre is a Discover Scuba Diving session — a shallow, instructor-led try-dive with no certification required. From there, most centres run the full PADI pathway (SSI at a handful of resorts) through Open Water and beyond, so a first taste and a real certification can happen on the same trip.
