Finolhu, a Seaside Collection Resort

An entertainment-forward 'island playground' across four connected islands and a 2km sandbank, built around a nightlife-driven Beach Club identity as much as an outsized kids' programme — broad appeal rather than one single guest type.

An elevated view of Beach Club's stretch of beach, with red-and-white striped umbrellas over pink loungers, a wooden jetty into the lagoon, and a red vintage VW van parked among the palms
A Two Bedroom Rockstar Villa's overwater deck, framed by thatched roof eaves, with a plunge pool running to an infinity edge over open ocean
Jet skis and a motorboat moored off the beach in front of Finolhu's thatched-roof Water Sports Center, with kayaks and paddleboards laid out on the sand
Kanusan's dining room, with a long sushi counter, orange-striped banquette seating and a ceiling installation of hanging oyster shells and glass above the chefs at work

Finolhu spans four connected islands and a 2km sandbank in Baa Atoll's UNESCO biosphere, its 'island playground' identity built on a nightlife-forward Beach Club — resident DJs, its own Finolhu FM — alongside an outsized Oceaneers' Club and Teens Hut. 125 villas span ten categories, six restaurants include the award-winning sandbank Crab Shack, and the house reef runs a Coral Reef Propagation Project guests can sponsor.

The villas

A Lagoon Villa's shaded overwater deck, with a wooden jetty and steps leading down toward the water and a small island on the horizon

Lagoon Villa

Finolhu's entry overwater category, built on stilts with a private jetty stepping straight into the lagoon — 145 sqm with no pool, but the most direct water access of any villa on the island.

2 adults + 2 children, or 3 adults · No private pool · Overwater, on stilts with a private jetty

Beach Villa

A Private Pool Villa's plunge pool and thatched-roof outdoor dining pavilion, framed by a leaning palm and tropical garden planting

Private Pool Villa

205 sqm with direct access to the sea and a freshwater pool of its own — the resort doesn't label this category beach or overwater specifically, so confirm the exact setting at booking.

2 adults + 2 children, or 3 adults · Private pool (freshwater) · Direct sea access — not labelled beach or overwater by the resort

An Ocean Pool Villa's overwater-style deck, its tiled infinity pool appearing to merge with the sea beyond, two rocking chairs set under the thatched roof

Ocean Pool Villa

An aerial view of two thatched-roof Two Bedroom Interconnecting Beach Villas among the trees, each beside a tiled pool, a few steps from the beach

Two Bedroom Interconnecting Beach Villa

410 sqm across two interconnected bedrooms with a private garden and terrace — only three of this category exist resort-wide, built for families or two couples travelling together.

4 adults + 4 children, or 6 adults · No private pool, per the category's own page — see field note · Beachfront, private garden and terrace

See this villa

The same aerial view used for the Two Bedroom Interconnecting Beach Villa — no photo meeting the resort's own quality bar exists specifically for the three-bedroom category, so this stands in as the closest available reference

Interconnecting Three-Bedroom Beach Pool Villa

The largest villa at Finolhu — 735 sqm across three interconnected bedrooms with a private garden and terrace, for parties of up to nine. 'Pool' is in the category name, but the resort's own facilities list for this villa doesn't itemise one — a copy gap flagged in the field notes rather than resolved either way.

6 adults + 4 children, or 9 adults · Unconfirmed — the category name says pool, the resort's own facilities list doesn't; see field note · Beachfront, private garden and terrace

Recommended For

Families

Oceaneers' Club runs from morning to night for toddlers through teenagers, Teens Hut gives older kids a lounge and gaming space of their own, and the Two Bedroom Interconnecting Beach Villa — one of only three on the island — sleeps two families under one roof.

Groups after nightlife

Beach Club's resident DJs, shisha deck and own Finolhu FM radio station give Finolhu a nightlife identity most family resorts don't attempt, and the disco-ball-equipped Two Bedroom Rockstar Villa doubles down on it.

Divers and reef-focused travellers

Dive Butler International runs PADI courses from Discover Scuba through Open Water and beyond, the house reef hosts Finolhu's own Coral Reef Propagation Project, and Hanifaru Bay's seasonal manta rays and whale sharks are about 30 minutes away.

Before you book

How do I get to Finolhu, and how long does the transfer take?

Two options from Velana International Airport: a 30-minute seaplane straight to the resort, or a 20-minute domestic flight to Dharavandhoo Airport followed by a 30-minute speedboat crossing. One note from the resort's own FAQ: drones are prohibited on the island for privacy reasons, so leave yours at the airport lounge and collect it on departure.

Are meal plans available at Finolhu?

The resort's own materials describe a structured dine-around plan — breakfast at Beach Kitchen, dinner rotating through Beach Kitchen, Arabian Grill, Crab Shack or Kanusan with an à la carte allowance, plus a separate food credit for Kanusan's teppanyaki counter and for Crab Shack. The exact plan name isn't stated on the pages we reviewed, so confirm current inclusions with your consultant.

Is Finolhu suited to families, or does it lean more toward couples and groups?

Both, deliberately. Oceaneers' Club runs a full daily programme for toddlers through teenagers, and Teens Hut gives older kids their own space — digital storytelling, ocean-conservation projects, bonfire nights. After dark, Beach Club runs as a resident-DJ, shisha-on-the-deck nightlife venue streaming the resort's own Finolhu FM, which skews the island toward couples and groups as much as families.

What's the house reef and snorkelling like at Finolhu?

The house reef is directly accessible from the island and described by the resort as safe for novice snorkellers. It's also home to Finolhu's own Coral Reef Propagation Project — a coral nursery guests can sponsor a fragment, branch or tree into — and Hanifaru Bay, the seasonal manta ray and whale shark site, is about 30 minutes away by speedboat.

What's included, and what costs extra?

Non-motorised watersports — kayaking, paddleboarding, windsurfing, catamaran sailing — are complimentary; jet skis, hydrofoiling, wakeboarding and other motorised watersports are paid add-ons, as are Dive Butler International's PADI courses and dive trips. Spa treatments booked in advance get a 10% discount, blackout dates and Signature Couple Treatments, Facial & Body Care and Wellbeing Packages excepted. Confirm your specific package inclusions with your consultant before booking.

What villa categories does Finolhu have, and which have a private pool?

Ten named categories across 125 villas. Lagoon Villa, Beach Villa and Two Bedroom Interconnecting Beach Villa have no private pool; Private Pool Villa, Ocean Pool Villa, Beach Pool Villa, Two Bedroom Water Villa with Pool, Two Bedroom Beach Villa with Pool and Two Bedroom Rockstar Villa all do. The Interconnecting Three-Bedroom Beach Pool Villa is named for a pool, though the resort's own facilities list for it doesn't confirm one — worth checking directly before booking. There's also a standalone add-on, the Beach Bubble Tent, a one-night stargazing sleep-out on the sandbank requiring a minimum three-night villa stay to book first.
