Joy Island Resort Maldives by Cocoon

A colourful, all-inclusive-first island 40 km from Malé — Kiddie Cove and a dedicated Family Beach Villa category serve families with equal billing to Joy Island's honeymoon and couples marketing, under the same Cocoon Collection that runs Cocoon Maldives, Gold Zanzibar and You & Me Maldives.

Joy Island Resort Maldives by Cocoon sits in North Malé Atoll, a 40–45 minute speedboat or 10-minute seaplane from Velana International Airport — one of the shortest hops in the Maldives. Nine villa categories run from 50 sqm Beach Villas to the two-bedroom, 300 sqm Beach Residence, split across 91 beach and 60 overwater 'Lagoon' villas. All Inclusive is the resort's only named meal plan, built around The Market's daily meals, afternoon tea and non-motorised watersports — alongside five dining venues, Kiddie Cove for ages 3–12, and signature Glass Canoe and Seabob experiences across the island.

Recommended For

Families

Kiddie Cove runs daily for ages 3–12, the Family Beach Villa is named for exactly this group, and the Beach and Lagoon Residences both sleep up to six — a rare combination of family programming this close to Malé.

Honeymooners and couples

A 10-minute seaplane or 40-minute speedboat leaves more of a short trip for the villa — Beach Suite Pool and Lagoon Suite Pool add a private pool, and destination dining, weddings and vow-renewal packages are all part of the offering.

Active and watersports travellers

The house signatures — Glass Canoe transparent-hull tours and Seabob — sit alongside guided scuba diving for beginners through experienced divers, padel and tennis courts, and excursions out to Hanifaru Bay and manta trips.

Before you book

How do I get to Joy Island, and how long does the transfer take?

It's one of the closest resorts to Malé: a 40–45 minute speedboat ride, or a 10-minute seaplane hop with Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) at extra cost — return fare USD 300 for adults 16+, USD 190 for children 2–15, under-2s free, daylight hours only, and reservations need to be made through the resort at least 7 days before arrival. If you're arriving after 15:30 or departing before 09:00, the resort recommends speedboat instead. Checked baggage allowance is 20 kg plus 5 kg hand luggage (USD 5/kg surcharge beyond that), and Cocoon Collection's airport lounge is complimentary on arrival day (USD 35/adult, USD 20/child on departure).

What meal plan does Joy Island run?

All Inclusive is the only plan named on the official site — breakfast, lunch and dinner at The Market, afternoon tea, beverages by the glass (cocktails, mocktails, soft drinks, beers, house wines and spirits), and non-motorised water sports (kayaking, snorkelling, SUP) are all included. There's no separate half-board or full-board tier stated, which is unusual among the resorts we work with.

Is Joy Island good for families, and are there separate spaces for adults?

Kiddie Cove takes ages 3–12, daily 10:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00, with a supervised arts, games and entertainment programme. The Family Beach Villa (100 sqm, sleeps up to 6) is built for this group, and the Beach Residence and Lagoon Residence both sleep up to 6 as well. The official site doesn't list a separate teen club or babysitting service — we'd confirm both directly with the resort if either matters to your trip.

What's the house reef and snorkelling like?

The house reef is accessible from the sunrise side of the island, near the Beach Villas and Lagoon Villas, per the resort's FAQs — the official site doesn't rate its quality beyond that. Guided snorkelling and complimentary equipment come with every All-Inclusive stay, and the Dive & Water Sports Centre runs a Glass Canoe (transparent-hull lagoon tour) and Seabob sessions as house signatures, plus guided scuba diving for beginners through experienced divers. We check current reef conditions with the resort before booking.

What's included in a villa stay, and which categories have a private pool?

Four of the nine villa categories carry a private pool: Beach Suite Pool and Beach Residence on the beach side, Lagoon Suite Pool and Lagoon Residence overwater. Every villa includes Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a ceiling fan, wine cooler, mini-bar, flat-screen TV, tea/coffee facilities and a private digital safe; Beach Villas and Beach Suites add an open-air Maldivian-style bathroom. Only the Beach Residence comes with a dedicated Private Island Host (butler) and a complimentary private return airport speedboat transfer — no other category includes butler service.

Can we get married or celebrate an anniversary at Joy Island?

Yes — a dedicated wedding planning team runs ceremonies and vow-renewal packages, and a photography service (romantic set-ups, honeymoon, wedding and family shoots) is available through Guest Relations. One thing to know: guest drone flying is prohibited resort-wide as a Cocoon Collection privacy policy, so any professional drone shoot has to be arranged with Guest Relations directly.
