Dolphin Cruise

A dolphin cruise in the Maldives is a boat trip, not a show: guests head out by speedboat or traditional dhoni, most often as the light fades toward sunset, in search of wild pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins riding the bow wave or breaking the surface nearby. It's one of the more widely run excursions in the country — close to half the resorts we work with offer some version of it, badged a "dolphin safari," "dolphin quest," or folded into a broader sunset cruise — with a captain, a small group, and a wild population that shows up on its own terms.

Packaging is where resorts differ. Hurawalhi's All Inclusive Plus plan includes one regularly scheduled Sunset Dolphin Cruise, Jawakara Islands includes one per stay under its Premium All-Inclusive tier, and Six Senses Laamu gives its top villa categories a one-time cruise as a welcome inclusion — elsewhere it's a paid add-on booked through the excursions desk once you're on island. Baros treats the outing as more of an expedition than a set piece, running full-day trips by private dhoni or its own Baros Luxury Yacht that pursue dolphins or whale sharks depending on the day.

One resort departs from the wild-and-roaming pattern altogether. RAH GILI is built around a resident dolphin sanctuary, where pods of spinner dolphins gather often enough that close-up encounters are the resort's own headline feature rather than a hopeful add-on excursion.

Good to know

A sighting isn't guaranteed

These are wild, free-ranging pods — resorts frame the outing as a "safari," "quest" or "watch" rather than a promise. RAH GILI's resident dolphin sanctuary is the one property built around a known population rather than a search.

Usually a sunset outing

"Sunset Dolphin Cruise" is close to a house name across the resorts we work with, though Baros runs full-day expeditions and some resorts fold the dolphin search into a broader sunset cruise instead.

Sometimes included in the plan

Hurawalhi's All Inclusive Plus and Jawakara Islands' Premium All-Inclusive tier each include one cruise, and Six Senses Laamu gives its top villa categories a one-time cruise — elsewhere it's a paid excursion booked through the desk.

Before you book

Which Maldives resorts have particularly good dolphin cruises?

Most resorts run a version of the standard sunset outing, but a couple stand apart. RAH GILI is built around a resident dolphin sanctuary — pods of spinner dolphins that gather close to the resort often enough that it's the property's own headline feature rather than a hopeful excursion. Baros runs full-day expeditions by private dhoni or its own Baros Luxury Yacht that pursue dolphins or whale sharks depending on the day, which suits guests who want more than an hour on the water. See the roster below for what's confirmed at each resort.

How do I book a dolphin cruise, and is it ever included free?

At most resorts it's booked as an excursion through the watersports or excursions desk once you're on the island, and we can flag the interest in your itinerary ahead of arrival too. A handful of resorts build it into their plans instead: Hurawalhi's All Inclusive Plus package includes one regularly scheduled Sunset Dolphin Cruise, Jawakara Islands' Premium All-Inclusive tier includes one per stay, and Six Senses Laamu gives its top villa categories a one-time cruise as a welcome inclusion. We'll tell you which applies before you book.

Is a dolphin sighting guaranteed?

No — these are wild, free-ranging pods, which is why resorts describe the outing as a "safari," "quest," or "watch" rather than a promise. What a resort controls is where and when the boat looks, not what shows up that evening. RAH GILI is the one property built around a known resident population rather than a search.

What time of day do dolphin cruises run, and which dolphins will I see?

Where a resort names a specific time, it's almost always sunset — "Sunset Dolphin Cruise" is close to a house name across the properties we work with. On species, the two named most often are spinner dolphins and bottlenose dolphins, and it isn't unusual for a single outing to turn up both.
