Coral Adoption & Restoration
Coral adoption and restoration programmes are now a fixture of Maldives resort life, though what "adopting" a coral actually involves differs from island to island. Most work the same basic way: fragments are attached to a metal frame or rope nursery, lowered onto the house reef and monitored as they grow, usually under a resident marine biologist. Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa runs one of the larger-scale versions, its Reefscapers partnership having deployed roughly 3,500 coral frames.
Some resorts treat it as an included guest activity — plant a fragment, join a snorkel or dive session, hear from the in-house biologist — while others formalise it as a paid sponsorship. At Finolhu, guests can sponsor a coral fragment, branch or tree for a set fee, with a certificate and growth-update photos sent every six months; at Anantara's Dhigu, Veli and Kihavah resorts, coral adoption sits inside a named scheme, HARP (the Holistic Approach to Reef Protection Programme), run as part of the resort's general watersports activities rather than sold as a separate sponsorship.
A handful of resorts have built something more elaborate. JW Marriott Maldives Kaafu Atoll's INVENA Project, engineered with MIT's Self-Assembly Lab, is a 30-metre underwater structure designed to evolve into a coral nursery with guided guest snorkelling; The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands runs a Coral Adoption & Marine Biology Center at its neighbouring Fari Marina Village. Worth asking what's actually included before you book — a photo update six months later isn't the same as an afternoon in the water.

Is coral adoption free at Maldives resorts, or does it cost extra?
Both models exist, and it's worth checking before you go. Some resorts run it as an included guest activity — at Anantara's Dhigu, Veli and Kihavah resorts, coral adoption sits inside the in-house HARP programme (Holistic Approach to Reef Protection) alongside the resort's other watersports, rather than being sold as a separate sponsorship. How do I book a coral adoption or restoration activity?
It's arranged on-property rather than pre-booked online in most cases. At Finolhu, in-house guests sign up directly at the Dive Centre; elsewhere it tends to run through the resident marine biologist or the dive team — Ozen Reserve Bolifushi's frame-based propagation programme, for example, is run by the resident marine biologist with Best Dives. Which resorts have a marine biologist running their coral programme?
Quite a few, though the role varies in scope. Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru's Coral Propagation Project is run by resident marine biologists; Dusit Thani Maldives has coral-planting activities led by its in-house marine biologist; and at COMO Cocoa Island, the coral propagation programme is paired with a resident marine biologist talk for guests. It's a good sign of a genuine programme rather than a one-off photo opportunity.
Do I need to be a certified diver to take part?
No — most of what we've seen is shallow-water or snorkel-depth. Angsana Velavaru's coral replanting runs in the lagoon, where guests plant corals without a dive certification (prebooking is mandatory); JW Marriott Maldives Kaafu Atoll's INVENA structure is designed for guided snorkelling and swimming interaction rather than diving. A handful of resorts fold coral work into an existing dive programme, so ask if you specifically want to combine the two.
