Cinema Under the Stars

A cinema night in the Maldives almost always means the same basic picture: a screen set up outdoors after dark, seating scattered across cushions, loungers or the sand itself, and a film chosen to suit whoever is watching that evening. It's a genuinely common fixture — close to a third of the resorts we work with run some named version of it — though how formal the booking is varies a lot. At some islands it's a shared, no-charge slot on the weekly activities sheet; at others it's a private evening arranged through the excursions or dining desk, with the screen and seating set up fresh wherever the crew stages it that night.

A handful of resorts have turned it into a permanent, named venue rather than a one-off setup. Amilla runs its own open-air Amilla Odeon, while Gili Lankanfushi and Sirru Fen Fushi both call theirs Jungle Cinema. Six Senses Laamu goes further still, keeping a private jungle cinema of its own alongside a separate cinema room inside its SHELL sustainability centre.

Elsewhere the screening is folded into something else entirely. Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani both run a Cinema Paradiso that pairs classic films with a starlit dinner — Soneva Jani's version watched through headphones — and at Jumeirah Olhahali, every residence carries its own 120-square-metre roof terrace built for private rooftop screenings instead.

Good to know

Free on some islands, a paid private booking on others

Constance Moofushi's Cinefushi and Heritance Aarah's "movie under the stars" both sit on their resort's payable-experiences list, and Grand Park Kodhipparu's private beach cinema runs from US$230++ a couple with popcorn and drinks — check which model applies before assuming it's included.

Reserve a private screening ahead

Vakkaru's Private Jungle Cinema, with its dinner-and-movie option, runs by reservation rather than a walk-up slot — treat any resort's private version the same way and flag it when we build your itinerary.

Confirm indoor or open-air

A handful of resorts keep a separate indoor screening room — folded into a recreation centre or club rather than staged outdoors — alongside or instead of an under-the-stars setup, so ask if the open-air atmosphere specifically matters to you.

Before you book

How do I book a cinema night in the Maldives?

It depends on the resort. Some run it as a complimentary, shared slot on the regular activities calendar; others, like Constance Moofushi's Cinefushi, list it among a set of payable private evening extras arranged once you're on island. Tell us you'd like one when we're building your itinerary and we'll flag it ahead of arrival, or confirm it for you on the ground.

Which Maldives resorts have a particularly good or unusual cinema experience?

A few go well beyond a screen on the beach. Jumeirah Olhahali gives every residence its own private rooftop screening on a 120-square-metre terrace. Gili Lankanfushi and Sirru Fen Fushi both run a named Jungle Cinema venue rather than a one-off nightly setup, and Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani pair their Cinema Paradiso screenings with a starlit dinner rather than treating the film as the whole evening. See the roster below for what's confirmed island by island.

Is it a shared screening or a private one?

Both models exist, sometimes at the same resort. Six Senses Laamu runs a complimentary jungle cinema screening as a shared activity alongside a separately bookable private version, and a named venue like Amilla's Odeon is typically a standing on-island facility rather than a one-off setup. A private version — your own screen, seating and choice of film for the evening — is typically a separate paid booking arranged in advance, as it is at Constance Moofushi's Cinefushi. Ask us or the resort's excursions desk which applies before you plan an evening around it.

Does a cinema night ever come with food or drinks?

At some resorts, yes. Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani's Cinema Paradiso is built around pairing classic films with a starlit dinner, and Grand Park Kodhipparu's private beach cinema comes with popcorn and drinks as part of the booking. It's not universal, though, so check what's included when you book rather than assuming.
