Sandbank Picnic
A sandbank picnic is one of the simplest, most photographed things to do in the Maldives: lunch under a shade canopy on a strip of pale sand out in the lagoon, reached by dhoni or speedboat from your resort. It's usually an uninhabited islet or exposed reef flat within the resort's own atoll — no other guests in sight, gone again once the tide turns. Some resorts sell it as a stand-alone half-day outing; others fold it into a longer excursion.
How much ceremony gets attached to it varies by resort. Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa runs its off-site sandbank picnic as its own separate excursion, distinct from the resort's 'Robinson Crusoe' private-island outing. Velassaru packages the whole thing as 'Island Escape' — a dhoni sail to a secluded sandbank for a picnic lunch, with reef snorkelling built into the same trip. Kudadoo Maldives Private Island, true to its name, calls its version Dream Island picnics.
Some resorts frame it as a private, secluded alternative to the excursions list — Jumeirah Olhahali Island runs private excursions to what it calls 'an untouched sandbank for a more secluded outing.' Others treat it as one stop among several: Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives lists its Sand Bank trip on its own excursions distance chart, a little over eight kilometres offshore. Either way, it's arranged through the excursions desk or your butler on island, and the timing moves with the tide rather than a fixed schedule.
