Sunset & Traditional Hand-Reel Fishing

Traditional sunset fishing is the quiet counterpart to the Maldives' offshore big-game charters. Instead of trolling deep water for marlin or wahoo, a dhoni or open boat anchors over a reef edge or channel as the light drops, and guests drop hand lines or pole-and-line gear for grouper, snapper, rainbow runner and reef jacks. Resort crew run the boat, bait the hooks and untangle lines — no experience needed. Most resorts run it as a shared group excursion, with a private version available at extra cost.

The specifics vary resort to resort. At Constance Moofushi, the trip is dhoni-based hand-reel bottom fishing for grouper, rainbow runner, green job and blue fin jack, run as a separate departure from the resort's own offshore big-game charter. Hideaway Beach & Spa runs a different format — traditional pole-and-line fishing out with local fishermen, rather than the resort's own crew.

Whether it's included depends on the meal plan. Lily Beach lists a fishing trip as one of three complimentary excursions guests can choose under its Platinum Plan; at most other resorts it's a paid add-on, with a private charter costing more than a shared boat. It suits guests who want an hour on the water without a dive certification or a full day at sea — non-divers, families with older children, and couples filling the gap between spa time and a sandbank dinner.

Before you book

What's the difference between sunset fishing and big-game fishing in the Maldives?

Sunset (or traditional) fishing stays close to the reef or a channel, using hand lines or pole-and-line gear for grouper, snapper and reef jacks from a dhoni or open boat — Constance Moofushi runs it this way, as a separate trip from its own big-game charter. Big-game fishing goes further offshore and trolls deeper water for marlin, sailfish, wahoo and tuna. The two are usually booked and priced separately at the same resort.

Is sunset fishing included in my resort package, or does it cost extra?

It depends on the resort and the meal plan. Lily Beach includes a fishing trip as one of three complimentary excursions on its Platinum Plan; at most other resorts it's a paid excursion, with a private charter costing more than a shared group boat. Ask your consultant to check what's included before you book.

Do I need fishing experience to join?

No. Resort crew bait the hooks, run the boat and manage the lines — at Hideaway Beach & Spa, for example, the trip runs with local fishermen guiding guests through a traditional pole-and-line technique rather than expecting prior skill. It suits first-timers and families as much as anglers.

How do I book a sunset fishing excursion?

Sunset and traditional fishing trips are booked through the resort's activities or excursions desk, usually the day before or on arrival, since availability depends on tides and the boat schedule. IMJ can flag it as a must-include when we plan your itinerary, so it's confirmed before you land.
