Sunset Dhoni Cruise

A dhoni is the Maldives' traditional wooden sailing boat, and at most resorts a version of it — engine-assisted today, though a sail sometimes still goes up for the photograph — is kept on hand for the sunset cruise: an hour or so on the lagoon as the sky turns, usually with sparkling wine or canapés served on board. It's a lower-key outing than a dolphin safari or a big-game charter — no wildlife search, no fishing gear — just calm water, a small group or a couple, and the boat itself as part of the appeal.

Some resorts build real ceremony into it. Constance Moofushi runs its Sunset Cruise with a Traditional Dhoni as a paid excursion that includes sparkling wine and a chef's canapé; Baros keeps two named vessels for the outing — the private dhoni 'Nooma' and the Baros Luxury Yacht 'Serenity' — so guests can choose between the traditional boat and something faster. Velassaru splits the experience in two: a complimentary morning cruise runs four mornings a week, while the sunset version, with Champagne and canapés, is a separate paid booking.

A few resorts lean into the romance angle by name. Heritance Aarah lists a 'lovers' dhoni ride' alongside its standard sunrise and sunset cruises, pitched specifically as a couples excursion rather than a shared group outing; Taj Exotica frames its version as a chance to spot the resident grey dolphins that pass through its lagoon, on top of the usual sunset light.

Good to know

Usually a paid excursion

Most resorts charge for it — Velassaru is the exception we track, running a complimentary morning cruise four times a week alongside its paid sunset version.

Book the day before or on arrival

Arranged through the resort's excursions or watersports desk once you're on island — flag it with us in advance and we'll build it into your itinerary.

A private version costs more

Most resorts can swap the shared group boat for a private outing on request, usually at a higher price — Heritance Aarah's 'lovers' dhoni ride' and Baros's two named vessels are built around exactly this.

Dolphins aren't guaranteed

This is a sunset outing, not a dolphin safari — sightings are incidental. Taj Exotica is the one resort in our records that specifically flags a chance of spotting grey dolphins in its lagoon along the way.

Before you book

What is a dhoni, and what actually happens on a sunset cruise?

A dhoni is the traditional Maldivian sailing boat — plank-built, once purely a fishing and cargo vessel, now mostly engine-powered with a mast kept on for photographs. A sunset cruise puts guests aboard for roughly an hour on the lagoon as the light fades, typically with a drink or canapé service; Constance Moofushi's version includes sparkling wine and a chef's canapé as standard. It's a calm, no-effort outing — no snorkelling or fishing gear required.

Is a sunset dhoni cruise included in my stay, or is it a paid extra?

It depends on the resort and the plan. At most properties it's a paid excursion booked through the activities desk — OBLU SELECT Lobigili, for instance, lists its private sunset dhoni cruise as an extra-charge booking. Velassaru is a partial exception: a complimentary cruise runs four mornings a week, but its sunset version, with Champagne and canapés, is a separate paid booking. Ask your consultant to confirm what's included in your specific package before you book.

Can I book a private sunset cruise for a proposal or anniversary?

Yes — most resorts can arrange a private version rather than a shared group boat, usually at a higher cost. Heritance Aarah names this directly with its 'lovers' dhoni ride,' pitched as a couples excursion, and Baros keeps two named vessels — the private dhoni 'Nooma' and the Baros Luxury Yacht 'Serenity' — so guests can book either as a private outing. Tell us if it's for an occasion and we'll flag it when we build your itinerary.

How do I book a sunset dhoni cruise, and will I see dolphins?

It's booked through the resort's excursions or watersports desk, usually the day before or on arrival — we can also flag it as a must-include when planning your itinerary. Dolphins aren't guaranteed on a standard sunset cruise; Taj Exotica is the resort in our records that specifically notes a chance of sighting grey dolphins in its lagoon during the outing. If dolphin sightings are the goal rather than the boat itself, our dedicated dolphin cruise page is the better fit.
