Cooking Class & Culinary Workshop

A cooking class in the Maldives is usually a small, hands-on session run in or beside a resort's own kitchen — Maldivian curries, regional Asian dishes — led by a chef rather than watched from behind a demonstration counter. It shows up as a standalone activity on the excursions or activities desk, sometimes built around a garden tour, sometimes finishing with the dish you made served for lunch.

How it's run differs by resort. Anantara Dhigu and its sister Anantara Veli both run Spice Spoons, teaching Maldivian or Thai cuisine tailored to whatever skill level guests turn up with. At NH Maldives Kuda Rah, Malaa treats the class as a cultural experience rather than a standard lesson — four traditional Maldivian dishes, taught and then eaten with a resort chef over lunch. Joali Being folds cooking into its wider Culinary Learning Centre, pairing hands-on classes with herbalism sessions in a fully equipped kitchen, and SAii Lagoon's Badhige is built around farm-to-table technique, working with locally sourced ingredients.

A few resorts frame it differently again. Vakkaru pairs a tour of its own organic farm with time in the kitchen alongside the culinary team, and at family resorts like Sun Siyam Olhuveli and Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, cooking turns up on the kids'-club calendar as cookie decorating or mocktail-making rather than a chef-led class. Worth asking which version a resort runs before assuming.

Good to know

Usually a paid extra

Most resorts price it as a specialty activity rather than folding it into the room plan — Constance Moofushi lists cooking classes among its payable excursions, alongside its sandbank experience and sunset cruises.

Confirm the age format

Some resorts run it as an adult-facing chef-led session (Anantara Dhigu's Spice Spoons, Joali Being); others (Sun Siyam Olhuveli, Sun Siyam Iru Fushi) fold it into the kids'-club calendar instead as cookie or mocktail-making.

Not always available daily

A few resorts run it on a fixed weekly slot rather than any day you ask — flag the interest during your consultation so it lands on your itinerary.

Before you book

Which Maldives resorts run a genuine hands-on cooking class?

A good number do, in different formats. Anantara Dhigu and Anantara Veli both run Spice Spoons, teaching Maldivian or Thai cuisine tailored to skill level; NH Maldives Kuda Rah's Malaa teaches four traditional Maldivian dishes followed by lunch with a resort chef; Joali Being runs cooking and herbalism classes through its Culinary Learning Centre; and SAii Lagoon's Badhige is a farm-to-table format built around locally sourced ingredients. See the roster below for what's confirmed at each resort.

How do I book a cooking class once I'm at the resort?

It's typically arranged through the resort's activities or excursions desk after you arrive — at some resorts it runs on a set weekly schedule rather than being available any day you ask. Flag the interest during your consultation with us and we'll factor it into which resort we recommend and note it in your itinerary ahead of arrival.

Is it just for adults, or can kids take part too?

Both, depending on the resort. Properties like Anantara Dhigu, Joali Being and NH Maldives Kuda Rah run their classes as an adult-facing culinary session, while family resorts such as Sun Siyam Olhuveli and Sun Siyam Iru Fushi fold cooking into the kids'-club schedule instead — cookie decorating, cupcake making, mocktail-making rather than a full chef-led lesson. Worth checking which version a resort runs if you're travelling with children.

What will I actually cook?

It depends on the resort's focus. Maldivian curries and traditional dishes are the most common thread — NH Maldives Kuda Rah's Malaa teaches four of them specifically — alongside Thai cuisine at Spice Spoons (Anantara Dhigu and Anantara Veli), sushi-making at The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo, and a broader Maldivian, Mediterranean, African and Asian rotation at Niyama Private Islands.
