Anniversaries

A milestone trip, planned around the two of you.

Ten years or fifty, an anniversary is different to a honeymoon, and the island should be too. We arrange the details: the right villa, a table set on the sandbank, the timing of the evening.

Plan with IMJ

Who this trip is for

Anniversaries here range from a first year marked quietly to a landmark quarter-century that everyone in the family has an opinion on. Most of what we place is a second honeymoon in spirit, a couple returning to the water alone, without a wedding party or an agenda, choosing where to eat as the whole point of the day.

The decision usually turns on how loud they want the trip to be. Adults-only islands strip out the noise entirely; family-friendly resorts with an unmistakable couples thread, an undersea restaurant, a proper wine cellar, let a milestone land quietly inside a wider holiday, which suits couples travelling with grown children or simply not chasing an exclusively adult island.

What makes an island right

Adults-only or family-friendly-but-couple-first

Some milestone years call for a fully adults-only island: no children in the restaurants, no kids' club soundtrack. Others are fine folding the trip into a family-friendly resort, provided the dining and spa still read as a couple's occasion rather than a general holiday.

An underwater dining centrepiece

Ithaa, SEA, 5.8 and H2O each turn one dinner into the week's headline, the detail most anniversary itineraries end up built around, and the first thing we reserve once the date is fixed.

A wine cellar worth the toast

A named cellar, Vinum, a 336-plus-label overwater cellar, or 22,500-plus bottles spread across two restaurants, signals a resort built for pairing the dinner to the year being marked, not just serving it.

A couple's spa ritual, not just a spa menu

Overwater or underwater treatment rooms built specifically for two, rather than a general treatment list, are what turn an afternoon into part of the celebration rather than a stopover.

An on-site wedding pavilion, if a vow renewal is on the table

Useful only if the landmark year comes with an actual short ceremony in mind rather than just a nicer dinner, worth checking before assuming any resort can arrange one on request.

Experiences to build the days around

H2O by Andrea Berton, You & Me Maldives' fully submerged underwater restaurant, seating 20 guests

Underwater Dining

A meal inside a purpose-built, glass-walled restaurant below the lagoon's surface — six resorts now run one.

A private tasting dinner inside a resort's wine cellar

Wine-Cellar Tasting & Pairing Dinner

A guided tasting or private dinner held inside the resort's own wine cellar, hosted by a resident sommelier.

Halcyon Spa's couples treatment suite

Overwater / Underwater Couples' Spa Ritual

A spa treatment staged somewhere exclusive and built for two — an overwater or underwater treatment room, a private night ritual, a reef-view suite.

A private canopied dinner set on the beach at sunset at NH Maldives Kuda Rah

Private Sandbank Dinner

A private breakfast, lunch or dinner staged on the resort's own uninhabited sandbank, set before you arrive and cleared without trace after.

Worth weighing

Adults-only privacy vs. a deeper restaurant roster

An adults-only island guarantees quiet, but a family-friendly one with a strong couples thread often carries the bigger kitchen count, Conrad's 12 restaurants against Hurawalhi's four, for instance.

A closer speedboat vs. a farther private island

Coco Bodu Hithi's 35-minute speedboat gets you to dinner faster; Hurawalhi and You & Me trade that convenience for a 40-45-minute seaplane and a more isolated, adults-only stretch of atoll.

One headline dinner vs. a cellar built for the whole stay

An undersea restaurant like Ithaa or SEA is usually a single, one-night booking; a resort built around a large wine cellar spread across multiple restaurants, like Constance's 22,500-plus bottles, spreads the occasion over more of the trip.

When to go

Most anniversaries are booked to a specific date rather than a season, so the honest answer is: whichever months bracket the actual day. That said, December–April brings the calmer, drier north-east monsoon and the best odds of a clear underwater-restaurant view for the anniversary dinner itself; May–November's south-west season is quieter and better value, and it's also when manta and whale-shark sightings peak on western and Baa Atoll sites, worth knowing if the trip includes Anantara Kihavah, whose Baa Atoll reef sits inside that window.

Which villas work

Privacy on the deck matters more than square footage for an anniversary, so an overwater villa is the default pick, and Anantara Kihavah, Huvafen Fushi, Coco Bodu Hithi and Constance Halaveli all put a private pool in every villa, with the rest of the list offering pools in some categories. Couples marking a landmark year sometimes go further: Conrad's The Muraka, the residence half of the world's first undersea restaurant and residence, is the step up when the number is a big round one.

Before you book

What's the best Maldives resort for an anniversary trip?

There's no single best answer: it depends on the year being marked, whether it's a quiet return for two or a second honeymoon built around a specific ceremony, and how close to Malé you want to stay. We narrow a shortlist to two or three resorts in a consultation once we know the date, the milestone, and what you want the centrepiece dinner to be.

Is an adults-only resort necessary for an anniversary?

No. Several of the resorts we place for anniversaries, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, Anantara Kihavah, welcome families and still deliver a proper couple's dinner and spa afternoon; the difference is atmosphere, not whether the trip works. Adults-only islands like Hurawalhi or You & Me simply guarantee the quiet is built in rather than chosen.

Which Maldives resorts have an underwater restaurant for an anniversary dinner?

Ithaa at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island was the world's first; SEA at Anantara Kihavah, the 5.8 Undersea Restaurant at Hurawalhi, and H2O by Andrea Berton at You & Me Maldives are the others on our anniversary shortlist. Demand for all four outstrips the room in high season, so we book the table before the villa.

Can we combine an anniversary trip with a vow renewal?

Yes. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, Huvafen Fushi, and Hurawalhi all have an on-site wedding pavilion, which is usually how we structure it: an anniversary dinner plus a short ceremony, rather than a full wedding production.

How far in advance should we book an anniversary trip in the Maldives?

For December–April travel around a fixed date, six to nine months is the safer window: the underwater-restaurant tables and overwater villas on this list book out first. May–November has more give, but a specific date still narrows the options fast.

You might actually want

If the trip isn't tied to a specific date or milestone, and it's really just about time together rather than marking a year, romantic-getaways is the broader, less occasion-bound page to read.

Romantic getaways

If the plan is an actual ceremony, vows read again in front of a celebrant, rather than a private dinner marking the date, vow-renewals is the page built around the pavilion and officiant side of things.

Vow renewals

If this is the first trip as a married couple rather than a return years in, honeymoon is the more exact match.
