Maldives Visa and Entry Requirements: Everything You Need to Know

Most nationalities arrive in the Maldives without a visa. But the details matter — what to bring, what to declare, and what changes to watch for. IMJ explains.

The Maldives has one of the most straightforward entry systems for international travelers. The vast majority of passport holders — covering more than 170 nationalities — receive a free visa on arrival, processed in minutes at Velana International Airport in Malé. There are no pre-travel visa applications, no embassy appointments, and no electronic travel authority required for most travelers.

What you do need to prepare is simple. This guide covers everything clearly.

Visa on Arrival: Who Qualifies

Citizens of the UK, all EU member states, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and most other countries receive a free 30-day visa on arrival. The visa is issued at the immigration counter at Velana International Airport. Processing is typically fast — usually 2–5 minutes per traveler.

A small number of nationalities — including some with restricted travel documents — may face additional scrutiny or require a pre-arranged visa. Always check the current list of nationalities on the Maldives Immigration Department's official website before travel, particularly if you hold a non-standard or dual-nationality passport.

What to Carry at the Border

  • A valid passport with at least 6 months' validity remaining beyond your travel dates.
  • A confirmed return or onward flight ticket (printed or on your phone).
  • Confirmed accommodation details — a hotel booking confirmation or resort confirmation letter.
  • Sufficient funds to cover your stay (this is rarely asked about for luxury resort guests, but immigration officers can request evidence).
  • A completed arrival card — these are usually distributed on your inbound flight.

Customs Rules

The Maldives is an Islamic Republic and customs rules reflect this. Alcohol import by individuals is prohibited — confiscation at customs is certain, and penalties apply. Pornography, pork products, and items considered offensive to Islamic values are also prohibited. Prescription medications in reasonable quantities for personal use are permitted — carry a doctor's letter for any controlled substances.

Items you may bring freely include cameras and electronics, reasonable quantities of tobacco (small personal quantities), and personal jewellery. Currency limits: amounts exceeding USD 20,000 (or equivalent) must be declared.

Health Requirements

There are currently no mandatory vaccination requirements for entry to the Maldives for most nationalities. Some countries may have specific requirements — check with your government's foreign travel advisory before departure. The Maldives is not a malaria zone. Yellow fever vaccination is required if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission.

Arriving at Velana International Airport

Velana International Airport (IATA: MLE) is on Hulhulé Island, connected to the capital Malé by a short water taxi or the Sinamalé Bridge. For resort guests, the arrival process is: clear immigration → collect luggage → proceed to the domestic/seaplane terminal or speedboat jetty, where a resort representative will be waiting. Most luxury resorts pre-arrange all arrival logistics. IMJ coordinates all transfer details with the resort and shares the arrival briefing before you fly.

Entry Requirement Note

Immigration rules change. Always verify the most current requirements on the official Maldives Immigration website (immigration.gov.mv) before travel, and check your own government's foreign travel advisory for any updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to visit the Maldives?

Most nationalities — including UK, EU, US, Australian, Canadian, and GCC passport holders — receive a free 30-day visa on arrival to the Maldives. No pre-arrangement or embassy application is required. The visa is stamped in your passport at Velana International Airport on arrival.

How long can I stay in the Maldives on a tourist visa?

The standard tourist visa on arrival allows a 30-day stay. This can be extended to 90 days at the Maldives Immigration Department in Malé, upon application and with a valid reason. Most visitors do not require an extension.

Can I bring alcohol into the Maldives?

No — the Maldives is a Muslim country and import of alcohol by individuals is not permitted. Alcohol is available at all licensed luxury resort islands and on liveaboard vessels. You do not need to bring your own alcohol, and attempting to do so will result in confiscation at customs.

What is the passport validity requirement for the Maldives?

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates to enter the Maldives. Always check your specific passport and nationality requirements, as rules can change. IMJ recommends verifying with the Maldives Immigration website before travel.
