Underwater Dining
An underwater restaurant in the Maldives is a purpose-built room sunk into the lagoon, not a glass floor laid over the reef — an actual table below the waterline, with reef fish moving past floor-to-ceiling glass while you eat. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island's Ithaa is usually credited as the original: an all-glass undersea dining room running breakfast, lunch and dinner, with reef sharks and rays passing overhead, and the benchmark several later resorts have measured themselves against.
The venues that followed took the idea in different directions rather than copying it. Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas built SEA around an underwater wine cellar, seating just twelve for a gourmet menu paired by the resort's own Wine Guru. Hurawalhi Island Resort went the other way on scale: its 5.8 Undersea Restaurant sits 5.8 metres below the surface, reached by a spiral staircase down to ten tables, billed by the resort as the world's largest all-glass undersea restaurant, and runs set lunch and dinner menus rather than a single fixed format.
What they share is scarcity. A room built underwater can only ever hold a handful of covers, so these are reservation-only tables — usually the single hardest booking on the island — and worth confirming as part of your itinerary rather than left for the day you arrive.

Most underwater venues run a fixed menu rather than an ordinary card — SEA's gourmet menu is wine-paired by the resort's Wine Guru, and Hurawalhi's 5.8 runs set lunch and dinner menus.
Hours and closures vary
M6m at Ozen Life Maadhoo is closed Fridays, and Only BLU at OBLU SELECT Lobigili serves dinner only (no lunch) on Mondays — confirm the sitting before you build a night around it.

How do I book a table at an underwater restaurant?
Treat it as part of the itinerary, not a walk-up booking. These rooms hold a dozen to twenty-odd covers at most — SEA seats twelve, Hurawalhi's 5.8 has ten tables, You & Me's H2O caps at twenty — so tell us which night you want it on and we'll aim to lock it when we book the stay, or flag it to the resort's dining desk as soon as you're confirmed. Leaving it to arrival day is the most common way to miss it.
Is underwater dining the same as an underwater villa?
No. Almost every underwater venue in the Maldives is a restaurant you visit for a meal, not a room you sleep in. The exception in our network is The Muraka at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island — a two-level residence with an undersea master bedroom under a curved acrylic dome — a different, and much rarer, booking than a table at Ithaa.
Does underwater dining cost extra?
It varies by resort. OBLU SELECT Lobigili builds one complimentary visit to Only BLU into its all-inclusive plan for every four nights stayed; Kudadoo's guests dine at Hurawalhi's 5.8 at additional cost; Meyyafushi's Bubble runs as a separately charged, pre-booked sitting outside the standard meal plan.
