Soneva Jani vs Soneva Fushi: Which Soneva Resort Should You Choose?

Both are exceptional. Both are Soneva. But Jani and Fushi are entirely different islands with different moods, different marine environments, and different answers depending on who you are. IMJ breaks down the choice.

Choosing between Soneva Jani and Soneva Fushi is one of the most common questions IMJ receives from guests planning an ultra-luxury Maldives trip. Both resorts belong to the Soneva family — the same barefoot luxury philosophy, the same no-news-no-shoes culture, the same exceptional culinary ambition. But they are entirely different islands, with different characters, different marine environments, and different answers depending on the guest.

Soneva Jani and Soneva Fushi share a philosophy but occupy very different worlds.

Location and Atoll

Soneva Fushi opened in 1995 in Baa Atoll — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, home to Hanifaru Bay, and approximately 25 minutes from Malé by seaplane. Its Baa Atoll location means access to some of the world's finest manta ray encounters from June to November. Soneva Jani opened in 2016 in Noonu Atoll — more remote, approximately 40 minutes by seaplane, with a vast blue lagoon, fewer neighbouring islands, and a setting that feels genuinely isolated.

Atoll choice matters if marine life is a priority. Guests who specifically want the Hanifaru Bay manta ray experience should choose Soneva Fushi (excursions available during manta season). Guests for whom remote immersion and lagoon vastness matter more than specific marine encounters should lean toward Soneva Jani.

Villas: Fushi's Character vs Jani's Cinema

Soneva Fushi has a distinct residential feel — crushed coral paths, lush vegetation, and villas (a mix of beach and water) that feel more like individual island homes than hotel rooms. The villa interiors are spacious, filled with books and art, and have a warmth that reflects the resort's history. The beach villas at Fushi in particular have a garden privacy and a sense of natural lushness that is rare in the Maldives.

Soneva Jani's water villas are among the most dramatic architectural statements in Maldives accommodation. The signature water residences feature retractable roofs — a mechanism that opens the ceiling above the bed to the open sky, stars, and morning light. Falling asleep under the Maldivian night sky with the ocean below is a genuinely extraordinary experience that no other resort replicates. The villas are newer, larger, and more cinematically designed than Fushi's.

Dining: Both Are Exceptional

Soneva is one of the Maldives' great culinary names. Both resorts operate So Hungry — the Soneva outdoor dining concept — and both have multiple restaurant venues with genuine culinary depth. Soneva Fushi has the advantage of a longer established restaurant programme and the beloved cinema-on-the-beach at the weekly film night. Soneva Jani's dining has evolved rapidly since its 2016 opening and now rivals Fushi for depth.

House Reef

Soneva Fushi's house reef is frequently cited as one of the best in the Maldives — a long, accessible, healthy reef that begins just off the beach and can be explored without a guide. Encounters with turtles, reef sharks, and abundant reef fish are reliable. Soneva Jani's reef is also excellent, with direct access from the island's edge, but Fushi's is the more consistently celebrated of the two.

Who Should Choose Which

Choose Soneva Fushi if: you are a keen snorkeller or diver who wants one of the Maldives' best house reefs; you are travelling during manta season (June–November) and want Hanifaru Bay access; you love the residential, lived-in character of an island that has been refined over thirty years; or you prioritise beach villa space and natural garden privacy over over-water architecture.

Choose Soneva Jani if: the retractable-roof water villa is a specific aspiration and you want the most architecturally dramatic villa experience in the Maldives; you want a more remote, less-visited atoll with a vast, deep blue lagoon; you are travelling as a couple who will spend most of your time in or near the villa; or you want the newest, most design-forward expression of the Soneva philosophy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Soneva resort is better for a honeymoon?

Both are excellent for honeymooners, but Soneva Jani's water residences — with retractable roofs that open the sky above the bed — create a more romantically cinematic experience. Soneva Fushi is dreamlike in its barefoot luxury approach and offers a stronger house reef for couples who snorkel together daily. IMJ recommends based on the couple's priorities: villa drama or reef immersion.

Is Soneva Jani or Soneva Fushi more expensive?

Soneva Jani tends to be marginally more expensive than Soneva Fushi for comparable villa categories, reflecting its newer infrastructure and the iconic retractable-roof villa concept. Both are in the ultra-luxury tier. Rates vary significantly by season and villa type.

What is the transfer time to Soneva Jani and Soneva Fushi?

Soneva Fushi (Baa Atoll) is approximately 25 minutes by seaplane from Malé. Soneva Jani (Noonu Atoll) is approximately 40 minutes by seaplane. Both require daytime seaplane flights. IMJ coordinates all transfer logistics and advises on Malé overnight requirements for late international arrivals.

Does Soneva Fushi have better snorkelling than Soneva Jani?

Soneva Fushi has one of the Maldives' most celebrated house reefs — a long, healthy, immediately accessible reef that guests can snorkel from the beach or villa without a boat. Soneva Jani also has excellent reef access, though Fushi's reef is more consistently cited as exceptional. Both Soneva properties benefit from the clean waters of their respective remote atolls.
