The spinner dolphin is one of the Maldives' most consistent and joyful natural gifts. Pods of 50 to 300 dolphins cross the open water at sunset with remarkable regularity, often approaching the boat, surfing the bow wave, and spinning — the acrobatic leap that gives the species its name. IMJ pre-books private sunset cruises so this experience belongs to your party alone.
What this experience involves
A private sunset dolphin cruise is a 2-hour boat excursion timed for the golden hour, with a private dhoni (traditional Maldivian boat) or motorised vessel, champagne and canapés on board, and a captain who knows the dolphin migration routes. Unlike group cruises, the experience is private — your pace, your music, your moment.
What IMJ Arranges
- —Private boat booking (dhoni or motorised vessel by preference)
- —Champagne and canapé pre-arrangement
- —Timing optimised for dolphin migration and golden light
- —Captain briefed on snorkel or swimming stop if desired
- —Return transfer to resort
IMJ Note
IMJ recommends booking the sunset cruise for night three or four of a seven-night stay — early enough to still have experiences to anticipate, but after the resort has settled around you. The combination of champagne, open ocean, and the spontaneous arrival of 200 dolphins is reliably one of the most joyful moments of any Maldives trip.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are dolphin sightings guaranteed?
Not guaranteed — this is wild ocean. But the Maldivian spinner dolphin population is so large and migration patterns so consistent that IMJ's resort partners report dolphin encounters on the vast majority of sunset cruises. IMJ selects resorts and captains with the strongest sighting records.
Can we swim with the dolphins?
Swimming with wild dolphins is generally not recommended — it disrupts their natural behaviour. Observing from the boat, often with dolphins approaching to within metres, is the more respectful and actually more intimate experience.
