Private Coral Garden Snorkel

A guided expedition to remote reef formations — just your party

The house reef is where most guests snorkel. But the Maldives' most dramatic coral formations — deeper reef walls, remote coral gardens, sheltered lagoons teeming with marine life — require a boat, a guide, and the knowledge of where to go. IMJ pre-arranges private snorkeling expeditions that access these locations exclusively for your party.

What this experience involves

A private coral garden snorkel is a guided boat excursion to a specific reef site — selected by the resort's marine team for its coral health, marine life activity, and current conditions on the day. Unlike shared group snorkels, a private expedition means your own guide, your own pace, and your own discovery.

What IMJ Arranges

  • Pre-booking of private boat and certified marine guide
  • Reef site selection based on conditions and preferences
  • Private equipment set (high-quality mask, fins, snorkel, wetsuit)
  • Refreshments and snacks on board
  • Underwater photography guidance on request

IMJ Note

The private coral garden snorkel is one of IMJ's most consistent experience recommendations — the difference between a group tour and a private expedition is significant. Your guide's attention is entirely on you: pointing out marine life, adjusting for current, taking you to the best formations at the right depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a private snorkel expedition?

Typically 2–3 hours, including the boat transfer to and from the site. IMJ designs the duration around your comfort and interests — some guests prefer a focused 90-minute excursion; others want a full morning on the water.

What marine life might we encounter?

At IMJ's recommended reef sites: green sea turtles, blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, eagle rays, manta rays (seasonal), hawksbill turtles, moray eels, and extraordinarily diverse reef fish. No guarantees — this is wild ocean — but IMJ's resorts have excellent marine guide knowledge of where specific species are regularly sighted.

Is this available for non-swimmers or weak swimmers?

The private nature of the expedition allows the guide to adapt entirely to your ability level. Life jackets, noodles, and additional support are always available. Discuss comfort levels with IMJ before arrival and we will brief the resort team accordingly.
